As the nation braces for a significant demonstration in Washington, D.C., Connecticut residents are preparing for their own “2025 Freedom March” at Putnam State Park in Redding. Scheduled for January 20, this local event aims to provide a platform for those who wish to express their concerns about the incoming White House administration.
The “2025 Freedom March” is spearheaded by the Bethel Blues Sisters, a group formed in response to the 2024 election. Organizer Denise Madeline, driven by a sense of urgency and community spirit, has rallied support through social media and local meetings, highlighting the collaborative efforts of individuals across Fairfield County.
“It’s kind of interesting how it’s organically coming together”
Denise Madeline shared with Patch
The march is expected to draw around 50 participants, including members from REBs, an organization representing Redding, Easton, and Bethel. Founded by Celeste Cobb, REBs aims to empower individuals and provide a space for community involvement. Cobb emphasized the importance of the march as a local alternative for those unable to travel to larger protests in Washington, D.C.
“People are feeling a bit isolated, a little afraid, and they’re looking for support”
Celeste Cobb said
Reflecting on past demonstrations, such as the Women’s March in 2017, Cobb noted the emotional significance of the event. The march offers a chance for like-minded individuals to connect and find solidarity.
Madeline views the Freedom March as a stepping stone towards broader political engagement. She believes that building bridges and fostering inclusive conversations are crucial for future electoral success, emphasizing the need for dialogue across political divides.
“We need to start meeting people where they are”
