Hartford, CT — Thousands of demonstrators rallied across Connecticut on Saturday as part of a coordinated nationwide protest against President Donald Trump and Elon Musk.
The largest turnout occurred in Hartford, where the state Capitol lawn was packed with participants, speakers, and elected officials.
More than 1,200 protest events were held across the country, with sizable Connecticut gatherings reported in New London, New Haven, Stamford, New Milford, Danbury, Westport, Middletown, and additional towns. Organizers described the effort as a response to recent federal proposals and administrative shifts.
“When they say they’re going to gut the federal government, we say that’s not efficiency, that’s extraction, that’s extortion, we say hands off,” said B Perryman of the ACLU of Connecticut while addressing the crowd in Hartford.
Senator Richard Blumenthal (D-CT), speaking from the Capitol steps, declared, “Hands off our Medicare. Hands off our social security. Hands off our courts. Hands off our university. Hands off our free speech.”
In Middletown, protester Patrick Reardon offered a military veteran’s perspective. “I believe our country is being destroyed from the inside out. I’m a combat veteran who served in Iraq.”
Another Middletown attendee, Ellen Steinberg, underscored civic responsibility. “If we don’t come out and do this, nobody else is going to do that. We have to apply pressure on Congress.”
Connecticut Republican Party Chair Ben Proto responded to the demonstrations. “I think Donald Trump is doing exactly what Donald Trump said he was going to do in the way he said he was going to do it in the manner in which he said he was going to do it. And people protesting are people who didn’t vote for Donald Trump.”
The White House issued a formal statement through Assistant Press Secretary Liz Huston. “President Trump’s position is clear. He will always protect Social Security, Medicare, and Medicaid for eligible beneficiaries. Meanwhile, the Democrats’ stance is giving Social Security, Medicaid, and Medicare benefits to illegal aliens, which will bankrupt these programs and crush American seniors.”
Police presence remained visible but unobtrusive at major protest sites. No arrests were reported by Saturday evening.
Further demonstrations are expected in the coming weeks as national tensions remain elevated.
