EAST WINDSOR, Conn. – A bicyclist has died after being struck head-on by a driver under the influence, police said.
Authorities responded to Route 5, or John Fitch Boulevard, around 4:30 p.m. for a serious crash. Officers said a man riding his bike on the shoulder of the road was hit by a Chevy van.
Police identified the victim as 32-year-old Samalier Rivera-Tirado of East Windsor. He was transported to the hospital with serious injuries and later died.
The driver, 34-year-old Waldemar Serrano-Acevedo, was arrested after allegedly failing a sobriety test. He was initially held on a $1 million bond.
Serrano-Acevedo appeared in court Thursday, where a judge lowered his bond to $700,000. He is scheduled to appear again on April 14.
Authorities are asking anyone with information to contact East Windsor police as the investigation continues.
