LeBron James has been selected as the flag bearer for the United States delegation at the Paris 2024 Olympics. The announcement was made by the U.S. Olympic & Paralympic Committee, highlighting James’s significant role in the Opening Ceremony set for Friday, July 26, 2024, at 7:30 PM local time (1:30 PM EDT). The event will be broadcast live on NBC.
James, a four-time NBA champion and the league’s all-time scoring leader, was chosen by his fellow Team USA athletes in Paris. This honor places him among a select group of athletes, including Sue Bird and Dawn Staley, who have carried the flag for USA Basketball.
“It’s an incredible honor to represent the United States on this global stage, especially in a moment that can bring the whole world together.”

LeBron James’s Olympic journey began in 2004 when he won a bronze medal as a 19-year-old. He went on to secure gold medals in 2008 and 2012. Now, at 39, he is poised to compete in his fourth Olympic Games, joining the ranks of Kevin Durant and Carmelo Anthony, the only American men to achieve this feat.
The Opening Ceremony will take place on the Seine River, a unique setting that promises to be a spectacular start to the Games.
“Being selected by your teammates to carry the flag is a tremendous honor – and a testament to LeBron’s passion for Team USA and his dedication to his sport.”
USOPC CEO Sarah Hirshland
James’s selection as flag bearer is also significant in the context of his nomination by teammate Stephen Curry. This marks a continuation of James’s influential presence in international basketball, having scored 273 points in Olympic play, placing him third among all American players. Additionally, he holds a gold medal from the 2007 FIBA Tournament of the Americas.
The female flag bearer who will lead the U.S. delegation alongside James will be announced on Tuesday, adding to the anticipation surrounding Team USA’s presence at the Paris 2024 Olympics.
Team USA will commence their group play against Serbia on July 28, followed by matches against South Sudan on July 31 and Puerto Rico on August 3. The USA Basketball Showcase, an exhibition series, concluded yesterday, July 22, with the United States hosting Germany at The O2 in London at 3 PM ET, live on FOX.
