STERLING, Conn. — Authorities removed 42 animals — including eight dead — from a home on Margaret Henry Road in Sterling, officials confirmed Thursday.
Animal control officers from the Northeastern Connecticut Council of Governments (NECCOG) seized a mix of livestock, reptiles, and domestic animals during the operation.
The confiscated animals included a pony, 14 dogs, a goat, a potbellied pig, a bearded dragon, feral cats, kittens, a chicken, a rooster, guinea pigs, and pet rats.
“This was part of an open investigation,” NECCOG officials said. They confirmed no one has been charged at this time.
According to Connecticut State Police, troopers responded to the residence at approximately 10:14 a.m. on March 5. Their involvement supported NECCOG animal control with the service of a search warrant. Police said they are conducting “an active investigation in conjunction with NECCOG.”
The situation remains under review by both agencies. The condition of the surviving animals was not released.
On Thursday afternoon, a person at the home declined to comment.
NECCOG has not released further details regarding the cause of death for the animals found deceased or the living conditions observed at the time of removal.
No information was provided on where the surviving animals were taken or their future care. The case remains open and under investigation.
