WATERBURY, CT — A 56-year-old man is facing several felony charges after police said he shot his girlfriend multiple times late Thursday night on Berkeley Avenue in Waterbury.
Officers responded to the 200 block of Berkeley Avenue just before 11 p.m. following a report of an assault.
Upon arrival, police found a 44-year-old woman suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. She was transported to a local hospital, where she remains in stable but critical condition.
Authorities identified the suspect as John Irizary of Waterbury.
Police said Irizary and the victim were in a relationship and share a 22-year-old son, who was home at the time of the incident and called 911 after hearing gunfire. The son was not injured.
Irizary was arrested on scene and has been charged with first-degree assault, criminal attempt at murder, tampering with evidence, illegal discharge of a firearm, first-degree reckless endangerment, and additional related offenses.
Police confirmed a firearm was recovered at the residence.
The motive behind the shooting remains under investigation.
Irizary is currently held on a $1 million bond. He is scheduled to be arraigned in court on Friday.
