WETHERSFIELD, CT— A Newington man with two prior DUI convictions was arrested early Monday after allegedly driving the wrong way on multiple Connecticut highways, triggering eleven separate 911 calls, according to state police.
At 12:51 a.m., Troop H dispatchers fielded a cascade of emergency reports describing a black sedan driving the wrong way on Route 5/15 southbound and I-91 northbound.
Callers last saw the vehicle near exit 27 on I-91 north. Moments later, a trooper spotted the vehicle — a black Nissan Maxima — traveling westbound in the eastbound lanes of Great Meadow Road in Wethersfield.
“The vehicle clearly matched the description provided by callers,” state police confirmed.
The driver, later identified as Aaron Miranda, 39, of Newington, slowly attempted to correct course before being stopped. The trooper detected “a strong odor of alcohol” and noted Miranda’s “eyes appearing red and glossy.” Miranda “admitted to consuming alcohol prior to driving,” according to the arrest report.
Miranda failed the Standardized Field Sobriety Tests and was taken into custody. A chemical breath test revealed a blood alcohol content more than twice the legal limit, police said.
He was charged with Reckless Driving, Illegal Operation of a Motor Vehicle while Under the Influence (3rd Offense), Driving the Wrong Way on a Divided Highway, Illegal Entry onto a Limited Access Highway, and Reckless Endangerment in the First Degree, among others.
Held on a $10,000 bond, Miranda was scheduled for arraignment in New Britain Superior Court on March 31, 2025. The incident remains under investigation.
